Swedbank exceeded expectations with a covered bond on Tuesday after SR-Boligkreditt sold a well-received debut on Monday, and the Nordic issues were identified as being among the strongest results during a busy week in which spreads widened and many deals struggled to find demand.

Denmark and Sweden are among six countries where in DBRS’s view covered bonds are a particularly important funding instrument, meaning that issuers from the countries can be eligible for the highest possible uplift from their senior unsecured rating under an updated methodology the rating agency finalised last week.

Sweden’s Skandiabanken is seeking bondholder approval to transfer two outstanding Norwegian krone senior unsecured FRNs to a new subsidiary in Norway it is establishing ahead of a fourth quarter IPO of its banking operations in that country.

Sweden’s Riksbank kept the repo rate unchanged at minus 0.35% yesterday (Thursday), although market participants still expect the central bank to engage in further monetary policy measures over the coming months.

Stadshypotek sold a £300m three year FRN covered bond on Monday, proving that the sterling market is an appealing option for issuers and printing at a tighter price than could have been achieved in the domestic market, according to bankers.

Swedbank launched the first Nordic senior unsecured euro benchmark since May on Tuesday, taking advantage of a quiet market to print a Eu500m five year floating rate note, but bankers predicted that euro benchmark supply would remain slim in the summer holiday season.

Systemic risks in Sweden’s mortgage market are increasing, Fitch said on Wednesday, adding that any disruptions could hit the wider banking sector, although it noted that banks are mitigating the risks while households have good debt servicing capabilities and rated banks are strongly capitalised.

SEB took advantage of a window of stability early this week to issue a Eu1bn (Skr9.36bn) seven year covered bond on Tuesday, but both it and SCBC, which launched a Eu500m seven year into a deteriorating market on Thursday, had to revise their pricing expectations.

Länsförsäkringar Bank (LF Bank) sold its inaugural Additional Tier 1 issue on Tuesday, a Skr1.2bn (Eu128m) perpetual non-call five issue that achieved tight pricing relative to international markets and also LF’s Swedish peers in the domestic market. Meanwhile, SBAB issued a Skr1bn 10 year non-call five Tier 2.
