Nordea Mortgage Bank, a new Finnish issuing entity established following a demerger of Nordea Bank Finland, is looking into possibilities in the euro market and could launch its first euro covered bond in the fourth quarter of 2016, according to an official at Nordea.

Nordea is expected to establish a distinct Finnish covered bond issuer as part of a strategy whereby its Danish, Finnish and Norwegian banking subsidiaries will become branches of the Swedish parent, a move that will be put to the group’s annual general meeting next month.

Nordea Eiendomskreditt attracted £425m of orders for a £400m (€545m) three year floating rate covered bond on Wednesday, which, alongside similar issues for Lloyds beforehand and Bank of Nova Scotia afterwards, bankers said shows sterling to be an attractive option for issuers.

Nordea attracted over Eu4.5bn of demand for a “blowout” Eu750m (Skr7bn) 10 year non-call five Tier 2 issue on Monday that bankers said showed the market is wide open, but expectations for further supply next week are modest after only one Tier 2 deal followed.

Third quarter results of the big four Swedish banks came in below consensus expectations this week, with the impact of persistently low interest rates on net interest income (NII) and weak capital markets cited as contributing to the weaker than expected performance.

Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB) kicked off Swedish banks’ Q2 results announcements on Tuesday with pre-tax profits of Skr5.3bn (Eu570m) that were 14% ahead of consensus expectations, with strong commission revenues offsetting a fall in net interest income.

Nordea and Svenska Handelsbanken first quarter results announced on Wednesday echoed those with which SEB kicked off the Nordic bank reporting season the previous Thursday, showing strong net financial items, although Nordea fell behind its peers on net interest income (NII) that for SEB and Handelsbanken proved resilient.

Nordea launched its second Additional Tier 1 issuance yesterday (Thursday), a multi-currency three tranche package including $500m, Skr2.25bn and Nkr1.25bn pieces for an aggregate of Skr8.15bn (Eu882m) that achieved the joint lowest coupon for an AT1 benchmark.

Sweden’s banks emerged from blackout periods in style this week as Nordea Bank AB sold a Eu1bn 10 year senior unsecured transaction that attracted over Eu4bn of demand at a tight level yesterday (Thursday), and Swedbank today announced an inaugural Additional Tier 1 (AT1) transaction.

Nordea and SEB opened the latest earnings season this week with results that were resilient against the headwinds from autumn interest rate cuts and bode well for their peers, although the dividend and capital policies of the two Swedish banks contrasted.
